Sigiriya Lion's Rock

Lion's Rock or Sigiriya was the impenetrable fort of ancient Sri Lankan kings. Today we conquered Sigiriya. The sun beat down as we climbed past vertigo stricken punters. This climb made the 1000 steps look like a stroll in the park. Elderly visitors were helped by Sri Lankan sherpers but the kids climbed on. The view from the top was worth the climb as the green carpet spread out before us punctuated by Buddhas and blue lakes. The fort sat high on a lava plug of a now eroded volcano. We had an impromptu acro session at the top and a little picnic before  being moved along by some more cheeky monkeys. On the way down the mountain the kids made friends with a giant python. Fearless.
